Athabasca U is located in Alberta.
This is their website.
Most of the courses are done by correspondence, from my understanding, but a few science courses have a lab component that you would have to attend in person. For all of the courses I've taken they've mailed me textbooks, assignment booklets and study guides. I send assignments by mail, and I write exams in person at an invigilator (a business that has an agreement with Athabasca allowing them to supervise Athabasca exams). The closest invigilators to me were about a 30 minute drive from where I live.
I'm not sure whether students are reinstated for summer term. I think you should call your faculty, or go to McMaster and find out for sure from them. You could visit during their office hours, or make an appointment, and then just make sure to stay there until all of your questions have been answered.
For example, I don't think the Faculty of Science looked at any reinstatement applications to Level I for Summer 2009. They were probably especially busy during that time though.
