And The Winner Of The Email Vote Is...
Google!
With 70% of the student vote.
Of the 3504 votes cast Google Education Apps is overwhelmingly favoured 2462 to 1042 for Microsoft’s [email protected]
From this point the MSU is now continuing to work with UTS and the projected launch is in second semester of this new system.
Thank you for voting everyone and feel free to ask any questions!

Yes, G-mail has an account forwarding feature.
I imagine you will retain the same e-mail addresses; Google would likely host the mcmaster.ca e-mail domain, or something like that.

Yes, your email address will still stay the same! For example, if my current McMaster email address was [email protected], it will still be [email protected]. The interface will be the only thing that changes.
I believe Google allows you to forward emails to another account, but to be honest I've never tried- I have everything sent to my gmail.
I'm very happy about this as well, can't wait to see the finished product!
EDIT: Thanks for the confirmation on gmail having email forwarding!

Just for a couple FYIs:
You can still access you email in your Outlook/Thunderbird/Mail.app programs, too. If you use a mail client like I do, you'll just need to change some settings, but it will work the same as it does now.
If you like MS Exchange, Google offers that too (don't be bummed out that your choice of [email protected] wasn't chosen). That keeps your mail, todos, contacts, and calendars in Outlook up-to-date with your stuff on Google.
-----
Question: will we now be able to keep our email addresses after we graduate, or does the 6 month limit still apply?

Google will offer the service as long as Mac wants, so we can in theory have the addresses forever. Now that Mac doesn't have to worry about server space, there's a good chance we can get rid of that limit. However there's also the possibility Mac will impose an arbitrary limit.
So basically we might have to wait and see. The MSU is going to continue to work with UTS throughout implementation, and that's something that can be pushed for.

I still get mine, and it's been over six months. I don't know if that is the last day of the academic session or after commencement, though.

I would like to Sincerely thank every single one of you who voted and showed an interest in this project. The unprecedented turnout for this survey means as your representatives we have significant bargaining power in asking the administration to make the final step and adopt Google for a January Implementation.
It is also my hope that your support for our initiatives continues for any future projects or efforts by the organization.
