Hey Nadia

I found this on the birdcourses.com site. It's not very indicative but it's a start. Hopefully someone will answer your question for you though.

Hi;

It's been a few yearls since I took 1F03, but I can definitly reccomend it, especially if you have any interest in astronomy.

In general, it should be a an astronomy 'survey' course - you'll cover lots of different topics in modern astronomy, from planetary astronomy, to a bit of stellar evoloution and some extragalactic stuff. You get a pretty broad base.

Astronomy is a mathematically based science, so if you think math is the absolute worst thing ever and refuse to touch it I would avoid this course, but you won't be asked to do anything harder than a highschool level math, and not that often. Lots of non math/non physicse people take it as an option (lots of math and physics people take it as an option as well though )

I certainly enjoyed the course when I took it, and from what I've heard, it's being taught this year by one of my favourite astronomy profs at this school, in which case I would highly recommend it. I'm biased though, since I'm an astro geek ^_^.

ASTRON 1F03 was the best course I've taken yet!!!! Dr. Reid is brilliant. I took it last year and he made the material so fun and interesting (even on its own, the material is still very intriging). Deffinitely a bird course. He posts all the lecture notes. Also, the exam and midterm were sooo easy. You may find the assignments a bit difficult but that's because he expects us to use outside resources and such but for the midterm/exam, the questions are SUPER easy. Dr. Reid is really funny too and this was the only class I didn't fall asleep in.

Oh and as for the physics, I was a bit freaked out by that part as well...there is quite a bit of it in the assignments, but that's the most difficult it gets. Also, everyone was VERY active on the discussion board last year so we all help each other out. Dr. Reid provides most of the examples needed to solve the problems but a few questions were tricky - however none of those difficult ones appeared on the tests. Also we get a formula sheet too.

I didn't find Envir 1A03 particularily interesting, but it's still fairly easy course if you keep up with the readings and keep all the concepts straight.

Thanks Cubit and jachill! I'm definitely considering this course as an elective in second year.. Couldn't fit it for this upcoming year:(

I wanted to take this course, but it is not considered a "non-technical elective".
I would so take it if I could though!

Yeah, I remember astronomy in grade 9. It was really horrible too. We had to go outside everyday and plot the stars.

My friend's school in Guelph has a Grade 12 Earth and Space Science class, I was sooo jealous. It was everything I loved (astronomy, meteorology). My high school didn't have a single space science class.

One thing that did suck with ASTRON 1F03 though was the huge Observing Project. Oh man...great times...veryyyy late night/early morning discussions on the discussion board the night before it was due. XD

I know! I barely know any schools that have that class. I guess its based on demand? But I know so many people who would've taken it.. Ahh.. sucks

Uh oh.. I don;t like the "huge" in there haha

Lol Ah those people are lucky to have taken it. >.<

haha I'm good at making the Observing Project sound scary, I had to spend hours upon hours analyzing 300 or so data points and plot them all on graphs then write a paper about it. DX

Don't worry though, it's not that bad. I just left it to the last minute (literally) and I had no idea how to use Excel so that slowed me down a lot. Just don't procrastinate and ask for help when you need it and it's no problem. ^_^ The project itself was really easy actually - just time consuming.
