Big oops!
Alright everyone I woke up late for my exam this morning...too late to be able to still write it. The invigilator told me to go fill out the form to apply for a deferred exam and I proceed to do so. I was wondering if anyone knows of any stories similar to this...though it might be rare I'm sure I'm not the first to make this mistake. I'm guessing my case is pretty weak seeing as I didn't have a medical reason for being late. How often do they deny the deferrals?...If my app is denied does that really mean I'll get a zero on the exam and have to repeat the course? This is an absolute nightmare!

I'm sorry but yeah, waking up late for exam is not good. Your request will most likely be rejected. Medical conditions? too late for that. But I've heard many stories of calling your family doctor for a medical form of sickness before the day on the exam, with signatures and everything.

Maybe you can pass with your current mark, unless the exam is worth almost half..

My friend told me about one student a few days ago thought his exam was pm but it was actually am. Apparently he's writing the exam at the end of term 2 with all those students.

I hope it all works out for you!

My recommendation would be to go infect yourself with some bacterial culture in the biology lab and claim that the sickness caused by it is the reason you missed your exam.

Good luck!

P.S. Don't try doing so with anything labeled 'Anthrax'

I've heard both horror stories and surprising stores for people like you. I have a friend that flat out "forgot" his exam was a certain morning, and they let him write during reading week, which is think is a little unfair.

But, I also had a friend who mixed up the date for his exam, and they didnt let him write.

So, its a toss up

I once showed up to an exam two hours late (to my two hour exam) and they still let me write it and even offered to give me extra time if I needed it. I guess it depends on your situation or how they're feeling that day. Iuno, I think they could tell I was a mess and felt bad for me. That was way back in first year though... I would never try that again. I felt sick to my stomach.

I'm going to guess that the number of people in your class also plays into that decision. If there are like a thousand people in the class you're taking, they'll probably just laugh at you. If they class only has maybe 10-20 people (probably an upper year program), the professor probably won't let you fail to make sure he/she can keep that job :p.

That's how my boss over the summer explained it. He said that one of his classes in university was only 3 people (some epic hard math class), and during the exam the professor walked around and gave them answers because he knew that if just one failed, that was the end of his job. Then again, that was probably some time in the seventies...

My friend actually recently did that. Was sitting outside exam room with friends and someone called him, and all you hear on the other line when he was asked about the exam was "WTF????????"

He just got a deferred work or something like that, and is now writing February.

I know someone who accidentally slept in and missed their exam last year and they applied for a deferral and were allowed to write it on reading week.

Sleeping in is not a good reason to miss an exam but it's a mistake and people make mistakes.

It was a first year course with 600 students so I don't think number of students is the deciding factor.

i know a friend that missed her exam and only figured it out the next day which she though was the day of the exam. she was able to go talk to her dean's office and was given a chance to write it. you should try you best and talk to the people and explain to them. if its your first year i think they are more willing to understand do do something for you. good luck.

I'm not surprised they'd allow people to write the exam if they slept in. While I imagine it's a pain in the butt for the professor who has to supervise the deferred exam, there's no advantage to the student.

People who write deferred exams usually do far worse, than the rest of the class. The material is that much older in their mind and they haven't been constantly exposed to the class material in the interim between the original exam period and the deferred exam.

Deferred exams are usually all written in a room together, regardless of course. The prof has to be available if you have questions, but don't have to be in the exam room.

Hahaha, ya that was kind of funny when you told me that. Sucks for him, but sometimes life gives you the worst luck.
