Campus For Compost Update

Campus For Compost Update

Drumroll please.... in our first day we have officially over 630 signatures! And that is not even counting petition sheets that are not full and that have not been returned! Huge thanks to everyone who came out today!

We still need help for the rest of the week however. Please drop by the table to:
- SIGN IF YOU HAVEN'T
- help get signatures around the MUSC
- get petitions to take to class to get signatures

Our week goal is 5000 signatures. Totally do-able. Let's make this happen!

--MacGREEN

ABOUT THE EVENT

MACgreen needs your help! As students of the McMaster community we are all aware of how inadequate our waste services are.
In comparison to the Hamilton community located but a street away, our McMaster community is extremely limited in terms of the items that can be properly disposed of. In this day and age, and in a community so large, this is not acceptable.

In response to this, MACgreen wants the students to stand up for sustainability! Thus, we are implementing Campus for Compost—a one week campaign from March 2nd to March 6th 2009. In partnership with the MSU Services, this campaign will aim to raise awareness of our campus waste policies and showcase how MAC can improve. We will be holding an organic waste audit to measure what can be done, have volunteers promote environmental awareness, and most importantly be gathering petition signatures to show student support for changes in waste practices.

This will hands down be one of MACgreen’s largest events to date; thus we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to do help with the following:

· Be stationed in the MUSC and help pump the cause and get signatures (this also gets you a FREE TSHIRT!)
· Pass around our petitions amongst your groups or circles to help us gain support, and encourage people to join our facebook group!
· FIND US IN THE MUSC AND SIGN THE PETITION THEMSELVES

If we all combine our efforts a powerful and influential movement can be made. This is our school, our community, and our future—let’s fight to make it sustainable!

Please contact [email protected] if you can help in any way!

I'm all for campus composting and have signed the petition, just a few questions (since people at tables don't seem to know much about these issues):

1) How exactly are you going to implement this? Referendum?
2) Since M. DeGroote's son pretty much runs waste management, what has he had to say about this?

Although I am not an active member of MacGreen, a possible way for this to be implemented is a referendum, yes.

I think they're using it to help them convince the parties involved in the process... not a referendum.

And has MdG's son even been contacted?

Considering we can't recycle cups because they're too difficult to sort out and a large majority of the 'recycleables' are actually thrown out because of his waste management policies. I can't imagine him taking the initiative to do composting and Mac will probably agree with whatever he says.

It would be wonderful if someone from MacGreen could respond : )

I thought that we used to have a composting service at Mac. However, there were a lot of problems and so they got rid of it. Have those problems been taken into account?

I would encourage everyone to stop by the table in musc and put your name on the list. McMaster needs to step up and become the leader in recycling and compost so that other schools and institutions will follow suit. I just can't resist their tree-mascot thing... it's contagious.
