Can we use the HSR pass already on Sept 1st?
Do we just need to show the student card to the bus driver?

1. Yes, you can start using it September 1st, or before that, depends on the driver.

2. Yes, all you do is show the driver your student card and get on!

It doesn't depend on the driver, you can actually start using it about two weeks before school.

Although it does say starting from September, a driver said we are allowed to use it before then. Which is ironic then because it could then technically be depending on the driver.

It is depending on the driver. Some believe you are allowed to use them earlier (no idea why they think this, but whatever), but as you can see from the link posted earlier, as well as on the MSU website, the pass is technically only valid from Sept 1 - Apr 30. If you used the pass today, and a driver refused to accept it, there is nothing you can do about it. If they do accept it, then you got lucky.
