Getting back to platform-related questions, I'd like to discuss an issue that was raised earlier in this thread but which I don't feel has been fully addressed. I don't mean to harp on the same point, but I feel that this issue is fairly important.
Casey -
On Saturday, I asked you a couple of questions about your "... Less Fees" promise. In response you told me that the platform point involved bringing all of the fees listed in sections 2.2.2 and 2.2.3 of
MSU Bylaw 5 - Financial Affairs to referendum.
In my subsequent response to you (post #32 of this thread) I asked how and why you wanted to repeal these fees, given the nature of and circumstances surrounding each one. In the next post (#33) Dave Moore pointed out that the MSU doesn't have the power to "ditch" these fees, as (a) the University is unlikely to agree to a fee repeal, referendum or not, and (b) some of the fees are necessary in order for the MSU to fulfill its contractual obligations.
Unless I have severely misunderstood the situation, it does not appear possible for you (or anyone else) to follow through on this platform point. This was established on Saturday (four days ago).
I note that your platform was modified on Monday to remove your stance on the Coca-Cola referendum. However, the "... Less Fees" point remains. Additionally, you have continued to reiterate your promise (to hold a referendum on these fees) as recently as yesterday on your Facebook group.
I have two questions, though they are closely related:
1) Why has the platform point of holding a fee referendum not been modified or abandoned, even though four days have passed since the idea was shown to be unviable?
2) Why has your stance on Coca-Cola been removed from your platform (in response to student feedback), while your promise to hold a fee referendum has not (in response to its unviability)?
Again, I apologize for bringing this point back up again. That being said, I do feel that your answer to these questions is important.
Thanks.
