Both courses were very enjoyable in my (biased) opinion, but I found CS 1MA3 to be slightly harder than CS 1MD3. Reason is, CS 1MA3 was being taught by Dr. Anand who I think was teaching that course for the first or maybe the second time around and it wasn't as organized as everyone (TA's, students and himself) would've liked it to be. Also, in CS 1MA3 we used a functional programming language called Haskell, which is very different than imperative (procedural) programming languages such as Java/C++. In CS 1MD3, last year we used Python compared to the year before me Java was used. I believe Dr. Franek will stick with using Python which is a fairly easy programming language to pick up since it's really a scripting type language (as far as I know...) so that shouldn't be too bad. Don't expect to get much out of the lectures because he uses someone else's lectures which he acknowledges several times throughout the term due to the bad flow in which the material is taught. Also don't expect to get much out of the tutorials though I did find the tutorials to be much more helpful than the actual lectures (no surprise there). Let me know if you have any more questions.
