Complementary Courses
Hello everyone. I'm a new student at McMaster. I'll be taking engineering in the fall and I'm wondering about complementary elective courses.

Its required to take 6 units, so that means that you could take 2 courses that are totally different from each other, like an ECON course and a PSYCH course. Is this a good idea or will it lead to some problems in 2nd year when I don't have prerequisites?

I'm interested in taking ECON 1B03 because of engineering and management, but I'm not sure if I should take the other ECON course or something else.

Thanks for the help.

your concerns are very good. Your 6 units can be two different courses or two similar courses, as long as it covers to become 6 units.

I would suggest you look around for your future requirements and see what types of courses you are planning to take later on. Look at the courses and check their prerequisites, and see what you need to have in order to take them. Its definately important to look ahead and have a general idea of what to take.

It really depends if the other econ course (Econ 1bb3) is a prerequisite for things you want to take in the future. if not, then if you are interested in psych, then take that. its nice to have a variety sometimes, and develop new skills and learn new things.

this probably didn't help much, but you know best what your interests are and what you want to learn in the future, so plan from that.

Hey Jordan! If you're interested in eng & management the only prereq is ECON 1B03. So as long as you take that first year you should be fine. I believe ECON 1BB3 is a course you will eventually have to take either 2nd year or later on. It depends on which type of eng you get into. But like Eva said, check out the course calendar or the eng&mngmt website.

If you'd like to take ECON 1BB3 first yr you can, and then you can just take another elective later on for when you are supposed to take ECON 1BB3. If you decide to take both, some ppl have advised to take 1b03 first then 1bb3 Hope that helped!

The thing is though, is that I don't really know what I want to do for future electives. I was looking at 2nd year PSYCH courses, and it looks like you need to take both 1st year courses for prerequisites to get in.

I was also thinking about how likely it is that I actually get into engineering and management and if I really want to do it. I think I'm more interested in political science as an elective, although I can see it being quite a bit of work.

So I guess what I'm asking now is if anyone here has ever taken Engineering 1 and POL SCI 1G06 together? (I just went from wanting to take management to international studies...)
