What is the difference between Honours Life Sci and Honours Bio?
Hi guys,

For a good month I decided that I wanted to do Honours Bio but then I heard about Honours Life Sci.. what I wanted to know was what was the difference between the two. So far all I can see is that for Honours life Sci you do have to take life sci courses. Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks for the help

Life Sciences is an interdisciplinary program with a focus on psychology, biology and biochemistry. That being said, the program was made out of the old science program and is basically a program where you have a lot of freedom in what you can take.

The large majority of the Life Sci courses (which are new) are old bio/psych courses.

Honors Bio focusses on biology rather than having a more diverse look at many fields.

I checked on 2009/2010 calendar and some of the third year life science courses are not being offered but they should be becuase it is in the requirements for the major. Is there are reason for that? Also, I heard something about Honours Life science you don't right a undergrad thesis or something.. I may be wrong. Please correct me if I am.

Honours Life Science - many of the life sci courses are old biology and psychology courses as someone has mentioned before. For the most part, you'll be taking the same courses; however, life sci tends to have more electives than honours biology.

Honours Biology - you can specialize. This is important if you want to consider the option of doing a masters, although you can probably do one in life sci. In Honours Biology, you have to do a senior thesis whereas in life sci you can choose to do it. Many people in biology have switched to life sci simply because they don't want to do a thesis. It's also much more focused, but you still have enough electives if you'd like to minor in another subject.

A lot of biology courses aren't being offered in 09/10. They'll likely be offered in 10/11.

I'm pretty sure that you don't have to do a thesis for the Hon. Bio program, but it's required for any of the specializations.

There's some new life sci courses that have been designed for people just entering into the program, so previous life sci students don't have to take them.

As in the actual life science courses or the courses that people in the life sciences program have to take?

Life Sci 2A03 - New, can't be too bad though as it's taught by Dr. Dej
Life Sci 2B03 - Easy
Life Sci 2C03 - Pretty sure this is a new course
Life Sci 2D03 - No clue, I believe this is just a slightly adapted animal behaviour course, which I heard was hard
Life Sci 2EE3 - Easy
Life Sci 2F03 - heard this was a good course
Life Sci 2H03 - I think this is new

It's pretty much the program you are enrolled in.

Choosing second year programs happens later near the end of the year.
