do courses not round up final mark?
Hi,
I just have a question regarding rounding up final mark.
I just recently finished a summer course and by calculating the average, i have 72.95%. In grading scheme, 73 is 8 and below that is 7.
I saw from the post that they don't round up mark, but this seems so unfair, since it's such a slight difference that makes a difference in a grade point (7 to 8).
Did any one else got into similar situation?
Thanks in advance!

youre not at 73% so you are at a 7. some profs might round up if you ask, but its not unfair if they dont.

Technically it is fair; an 8 is 73-76, and the mark that you earned is below a 73.
You can talk to the prof and see if they're willing to bump you, but that's pretty much it. Some profs will do it automatically, but not all of them.

I've had a lot of lucky calls with this one. For three courses this year, I've been bumped up 1 grade point without being asked, even though I was 1-2% away from it.
Nice to know that not all profs follow the bump down policy at McMaster.

It won't hurt to ask them, if you tell them you're at a 72.95%, but they might be too lazy to change the grade since they already submitted them.
The sooner you email them the better! It won't hurt!

Don't be a wuss. Go talk to them face to face. Emailing is the worst way to ask a stranger to do you a favor.

I wouldn't say that a bump-down policy exists. McMaster does all grading to 2 decimal places. So, 72.95% is an entirely legitimate mark--which does fall below the minimum threshold for an 8. Unfortunate, but fair. Needless to say, this isn't high school where grades are handed out on a platter.
