Do Grad schools care if you take too many Level 1 electives?
I'm extremely unhappy that I have 5 electives this coming year and my options are limited because all Level 2 or above courses have pre-requisites.
Some people told me if you take too many level 1 electives it will make you look bad for grad school, is that true?
Also, if you know any good/easy Level 2 or above courses for FIRST term, please comment, it will really help!
Thanks.

P.S. My electives so far have been Econ 1B03, Chem 1A03, Chem 1AA3, Chem 2OA3, Physics 1L03, Earth Sci 2GG3, Earth Sci 2WW3, French 1Z06, Astron 2B03, and Econ 2G03.
I currently have Classics 2MT3, French 2Z06, Health Sci 3X03 as electives

Im not sure this University cares about anything you take as long as you pay and take all the courses required for your degree along the way.

This isn't about grad school and I'm not sure if you're aware but there is a limit to how many first year courses you're allowed to take that will contribute to your degree. If you go into Mosaic Student Centre -> My Academics -> View my advisement report, it should tell you how many units you are allowed to have from Level 1 that will contribute to your degree so just make sure you don't go over that

Yeah I know, I still have 9 units of first year courses I can take without going above the limit for my degree. So in the end grad school don't care?

i know professional schools care if you take more than 2 lvl 1 or 2 courses/ semester as a 3rd or 4th year. your application is treated as if you didn't take courses of appropriate difficulty

A LOT of grad school program want to see ADVANCED level courses in areas you are interested in applying. So yes, if your courses are all level 1 and you are a 4th year, they think you are not taking challenging or advanced courses that might be needed for research. But I think 9 units of first year course is fine, but try to get more level 3/4 courses.

I have been lucky enough to be on a few grad committee's and they absolutely look at what type of courses you take. Some people care while others don't but to say it doesn't matter would be a mistake.

It is obvious when you take courses like Natural Disasters that you are simply avoiding taking difficult classes. They also get concerned when you cancel to many classes. I have seen committee members looks at applications that have 3 cancelled classes and immediately dismiss it.

Western looks at it for professional and graduate programs for sure, other universities would like you to show academic rigour, though I don't have time to search them up right now. As long as its 1 or 2 a semester you are okay

For Western the 3/5 rule applies. 60% of your courses in a senior year must be senior year courses, so as to prevent students from inflating their GPAs by taking simpler introductory courses.

Although the University of Toronto medical school has no such explicit requirement, they do take subjective looks at your curriculum as part of the academic assessment. Rumor has it the University of Ottawa does something similar. It is always in your interest to pursue course work at your academic level for both your learning and for future applications.
