doormats
i have a really weird question
do people usually have doormats outside their room? is that allowed?
when you come in from outside in the winter and your shoes are all wet,
where do you wipe them? do you just bring them into your room :S

Having a doormat outside your room isn't going to fly unfortunately. It'll either get taken/moved by the cleaning staff or a random passerby.
Just wipe your shoes on the carpet outside your room then bring them in. You can always grab a boot mat at the dollar store to put wet shoes on as well.

It's your room, you can remove your shoes two feet after entering and tell all your visitors to do the same.

I had a small doormat inside my room near the door. It was good for umbrellas and boots and such.

in theory, a great idea
in reality:
a) drunks will steal it/pee on it
b) you'll look like a nerd
c) your carpets will be filthy anyway, don't sweat it

on that note, anything you keep outside your room will be stolen/vandalized by drunks.

Just take the stairs, by the time you get up to your room your shoes will be almost dry. And I agree about the drunk thievery, it sucked. Keep everything locked up.

If you dry your shoes at the entrance of the building, by the time you get to your room, they'll definitely be dry. As mentioned, I definitely don't recommend having a door mat outside your room.
