I'm just wondering because someone told me the last day to drop was on Sept 15th but I'm quite sure that was only for adding classes.

you can still cancel classes, however it will show up on your transcript as being canceled. i believe you can cancel them until the exams start, but i'm not 100% sure on that.

Dropping courses works as follows:
Until the drop/add deadline you can pick and change courses
After that you can drop a course. However, you will not get reimbursed the total amount of your tuition (you get a percentage, which decreases over time). You're also not allowed to refund your textbooks at this time
The course will show up as 'Canceled' on your transcript
There is a pre-determined date each term (usually a little more than half-way through the term) which allows you to drop a class without penalty
This means it shows up as canceled as previously mentioned.
However, if you drop the course after this date you will receive an F grade for the course.

There is a final date to drop a course, which is closer to the end of october or early November.
