Eng + Minors.. and other stuff
So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go for Eng + Society, which frees up enough space for a minor, so I figured I might as well put my electives to good use... I just can't pick one though. The Eng elective system makes things more complicated for me anyway.

Anyway, I got this list http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/engandsoc/electives.html off the Eng/Soc site, and the thing is most of those elective routes I'm either not interested in, not good at, or not eligible for.

So then I went to this Eng elective list http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/documents/electives.pdf and looked at anthro, since I originally thought anthro, and found that there were enough courses to fill the minor req for anthro here http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1676.html even with all the restricted courses.

Now I've just got a couple questions:

- On the electives list it doesn't mention anything either way about 4th year anthro, should I assume it's allowed for eng or not allowed?
- I read somewhere for psych that taking bio is highly recommended, but I've never taken bio in my life, would it be a big deal?
- It doesn't mention env. studies on the electives list, are Eng kids not allowed to go for env. studies? :(
- Kinda offtopic, but is having 8 hours of courses in a day terrible if it leaves a couple of lighter days in my week, and it's not back to back? Most I have back to back is 5 hours thanks to the labs...

Thanks

If the course is not on the electives list then it will not count towards your degree. So if you take the course, you'll have to make up the credits for your degree.

Now I'm not 100% sure, but I think it still goes towards your minor. Basically it just means you are taking extra units that only go towards your minor.

I highly suggest calling Sally Williams, the undergrad engineering academic advisor, to discuss your options.

Just to clarify a couple of things, in society programs there are two different types of electives

1) Complementary Study electives (6 units worth), these are the ones with a specific list of courses because of Canadian Council of Professional Engineers Accreditation requirements. The idea is that these courses are supposed to focus on humanities / social sciences and give future engineers a broad perspective on society.

2) Focus electives: (18 credits worth) specific to society these electives can basically be almost anything and allow you to minor in a program or have some broadened field of study. As has been said by other posters in similar threads, essentially you're required to submit a plan / outline of why you've picked focus electives. You can choose to try and use them to get a minor, but you don't have to. What the society program wants to avoid though is people just taking random courses without a goal / theme.

So on your questions:
4th year anthro: no reason it can't count for a focus elective, but would have to be approved by the dean for a complementary studies elective
Bio: no idea sorry
Env studies: appears it can't count for CS elective (likely because its science based) but again, no reason it can't count as a focus elective as long as its in your plan.
8 hours: is hard but reasonable as long as you have sufficient breaks. Having long periods of time without classes on other days will give you a good chance to find a place to study and get a solid block of work done.

If you can't fit a minor in the 18 credits of focus electives and 6 credits of CS electives, you can always take an extra course or two one summer to get enough credits to fill up your minor. And finally, you should contact the engineering advisors to get definitive answers on all your questions.

I've got a kinda related question but it's fine if people don't answer it haha

Does Enviro Sci count towards your GEOG minor in Eng & Soc. because I'm already in Eng & Soc. and it says nothing about taking upper year Enviro Sci courses and having them count towards a geo minor. So if anyone's got the info it would be a lot of help. Apparently theres a bird 2nd year Enviro Sci about water haha and I wanted to take it.

I'm probably going to email them in just to make sure

That's for the minor in Geography. I'm not quite sure if you're asking for this though....
