English - Longer Genre
I just had a question pertaining to English next term,
i have a heavy course and wanted some advice about readings.

Would you suggest to read some of the readings in advance?
Anyone who has taken this class, or has input please comment.
Thanks!

Hi Haley,

I took this course in the winter of 2010 with Dr. Brophy (who I don't think is teaching it anymore). While I do recommend reading some of the texts beforehand, it can sometimes be hard because you don't necessarily know what you're looking for when you read it. However, I can also say that sometimes it ends up like that anyways because you don't actually cover the book in lecture until after you've read it. Unfortunately, that's the way it works in all English classes, but anyway. I would recommend perhaps reading the novels that come at the first half of the course; otherwise you may forget the content by the time you come to it in the course anyway. Take notes while you're reading and highlght/write notes in the margins as you go! It will be really helpful. And I recommend rereading a text if you find that you'll be writing an essay on it.

This is a challenging course because you do need to keep up on your readings. When I took it, we only spent 2-3 lectures on a novel so you can fall behind quickly! If you have the time, reading at least some of the texts may be beneficial to you.
