Entrance Scholarship Question
Sorry if a similar question was addressed elsewhere, but does anyone know why entrance scholarships are not renewable anymore? Only two years ago they were retainable for all 4 years of study. Just curious.
Also, are there many automatic scholarships that are awarded to upper year undergraduates based on marks?

I believe they ARE renewable but only for 2 years instead of 4. And most undergrad scholarships are awarded automatically without an application.

The recession really depleted McMaster's endowment so they had to cut costs.

Every University was definitely hit. Since endowments are invested in order to generate a revenue stream, the stock market crash really hit hard. :(

Wow, sucks for me I guess. I'm looking at the in-course awards now and some of them are waay too specific.

85-90% of people never get to renew them anyways

I'd only have to keep an 80% if the scholarship was like last year's, so since mine was the president's, I don't think I would have a problem keeping it... unless people's marks drop by a whopping amount in first year.

Really depends. I know plenty of people who've lost the president's scholarship, but I know people who kept it too.

Exactly, with high school grade inflation, there are a lot of people who got 95%+ in high school who will struggle to get 70% in university.

So has anyone received an in-course award based only on marks? From what I'm reading by checking each one (tedious, I know), they are pretty hard to get unless you meet one of the super-specific criteria or have the highest mark in your program.

I wouldn't ever count on winning one, they're hard to get.

I've seen so many people on the forums saying that there are lots of them, and that several are automatic. Where are these automatic awards?

That ends up being the case more often than not.
Last year I got "THE DR. HARRY LYMAN HOOKER SCHOLARSHIPS" because of academic standing, and that was worth $1500.
This year I'm so far eligible for THE DR. HARRY LYMAN HOOKER SCHOLARSHIPS again and THE DONALD HART SCHOLARSHIP worth $400. They were both automatic too (I didn't apply for them).

Do you think you were the highest student in your program for the Donald Hart one, if you don't mind my asking? There may be something that is equivalent for my program, but most of the faculty-specific ones for Health Sciences are for nursing.
