Heyy everyone, i have a question for upper level kin students, but anyone can answer. So I have Chem 1A03 first term, along with Calc 1LS3 annd my 3 kin courses. I wanted to take Psychology 1X03, to see if I am interested in it and if I wanted to minor in that. So I was thinking of substituting Psychology 1X03 for Chem 1A03, but I am not sure if I should. Should I?, and is Chem 1A03 hard compared to Psychology 1X03 and grade 12 chem? What is your opinion? Cause I was thinking of taking Chem 1A03 over the summer along with Chem 1AA3, or Psychology 1X03 with Chem 1AA3...but I am not sure which is the right decision.

Chem 1A03 compared to gr 12 chem if you had a good gr 12 chem experience is not hard. Chem 1A03 compared to Psych 1X03 in my opinion is a lot harder. Chem 1A03 requires a lot more work, it has 2 midterms, psych only 1 and it has labs, psych only tutorials. On top of that psych lectures are online so it would free up your schedule more. You said you maybe want a minor in psych but for a lot of second year psych courses you need both psych 1X03 and 1XX3.

Why do you want to take chem? I would take the chems together. It's not that big a deal but the acid-base unit in chem 1a03 could be useful in chem 1aa3. So you can take both either together in fall/winter or spring/summer. A minor in psych would require 1xx3, which requires 1x03. If you don't take 1x03 in fall, you will need to wait until the second half of your second year to take 1xx3 (if it's not offered in summer). If so, you will be forced to take level 2 psych courses in your third year and level 3 courses in your fourth year, which you may or may not get because of possible conflicts with your required kin courses. So I'd take psych 1x03 in fall. If not, take the chems together and psychs together whenever you like during first year.

Since I began my studies at Mac Psych 1X03 and 1XX3 have been offered during every spring summer session. Nothing is guaranteed but it is likely that the trend will continue in 2012. Upper year classes are the ones that are least likely to be offered for the spring summer session as enrolment tends to be limited during the regular school year as is.

It depends on the med school, a lot of them do, but some don't even have pre-requisites. You'll have to research the schools you're interested in to find out more about pre-reqs.

None of the Ontario med schools require a year of general chem except for Ottawa. Ottawa does not require first year chem directly, but in order to fulfill its biochem/orgo/chem requirement, you will need to take chem.

If you take psych 1x03 in the summer with chem 1aa3, you would wait til third year to take lvl 2 psych courses. And for the reasons (possible conflicting courses) i mentioned in my previous post i would take psych together and chem together.

ok so if I did take the 2 chems over the summer, and there are 2 terms for it, I would have to take chem 1A03 first term and chem 1AA3 second term? how would that work out? cause i heard you can take 4 courses per summer, and 2 courses per term, but is it alright to take 1 course per term?

Unless you require osap there are no penalties for taking 1 course per term during the spring/summer. If you require osap you must register for 2 classes in a term.

so your saying if i don't need osap, there are no fees that i have to pay at all for taking 1 course per term? but there is a fee if i take 2 courses per term?

No, there are still fees, equivalent to the amount you'd pay during the term for a course (for me this summer, I think it was ~$750/course). So if you're only taking 2 courses, then it's ~$1500, 4 courses would be ~$3000, etc.

if i took psych 1x03 with chem 1aa3 over the summer, cant i still take level 2 psych courses in second year? because i can take 1xx3 during second term in the summer,
and isnt that equivalent to me taking chem 1a03 first term and chem 1aa3 second term over the summer, i'd still be able to take level 2 chem courses in the second year right?

I'd recommend taking both psychs during the regular school year and both chems during the spring summer or vice versa.

Ok so I am about to make my final decision...Would you guys take Psych 1X03 and Psych 1XX3 during the fall/winter term and Chem 1A03 and Chem 1AA3 during the summer??? or vice versa? keeping in mind that I do have to take both Chems and that I am unsure if I would like Psychology....

None of us can tell you what to do. Are you strong in chem? If so, take it during the fall/winter, if not, just take it in the summer and focus solely on chem. Psych isn't difficult if you keep up with the materials and watch the lectures ahead of time. Just make sure you don't split up the 2 chems (i.e. take one in the fall term and the other in the summer) because you'll forget the material in those few months.
