Grade points in between whole numbers
when applying to other schools, they say the cut off is 80% for application to a certain program. i know 9 corresponds to 79 range and 10 corresponds to 80 range. so how does the in between mark get translated?

adding up the lower value of each range gives a certain mark, but the grade report reflects 9.6 in my case. so how do other schools interpret this??

thanks

9.6 would be about an A- average. So about an 80ish. You could also try to convert to the GPA scale (out of 4.0) and report your gpa that way. Here's a conversion chart:

i'm pretty sure they convert each individual grade to the 4.0 scale, then add them and divide by the number of courses.

A 9.6 is actually a B+ so between 77 and 79

Not exactly. For example, you need roughly an 80 average (or a 9.5) to get onto the Dean's Honour List.

By that logic also, someone with an 11.6 average will have between 85-89. Again, this isn't really clear-cut. You could have gotten 100 in 6 courses, and 89 in 4 courses, and received an 11.6. Clearly, this person would have roughly a 95 average and NOT between 85 to 89. This is why it makes sense to convert to the GPA scale, since you can't really just assign percentages.

GPA scale works as brendanp mentioned:
