GUCEL Project Opportunities
The GUCEL (Graduate/Undergraduate Collaboration for Experiential Learning) program is a new initiative, which allows graduate and undergraduate students to collaborate with one another while pursuing an experiential learning project. The program is supported by SPICES funding through the School of Graduate Studies. The McMaster Office of Sustainability is overseeing the pilot program, with projects focusing on sustainable initiatives within the university and the local community.
The first GUCEL project is currently underway. This inaugural project focuses on waste management at McMaster University and is being supported by the Facility Services Department. As part of the project, Janelle Trant (M.Sc. student in Earth Sciences) is working to improve waste volume reporting with the goal to make McMaster’s waste reports more user-friendly and easy to interpret. Once completed, waste volume data can be easily shared with the internal and external community. Jeff Chan (4th year Life Science major) is working to engage faculty, staff and students in waste reduction and diversion through infrastructure improvements, education and community engagement initiatives.
We are looking for a second group of students to develop their own project idea! If you have a great idea about improving sustainability on campus or within the community and are interested in gaining experience in developing and implementing of a sustainability-related project please contact Melissa Gallina, GUCEL Program Coordinator, at [email protected] to find out more about the GUCEL program and how to get involved!
