How are years arbitrary? It's the amount of time the Earth takes to orbit the Sun.

While 1 year is the amount of time it takes the earth to orbit the sun, the point we define in that orbit as the 'new year' is arbitrary. The calendar could have very well started with January in summer, it'd make no difference.
