Hi, so i totally slacked off this semester and got brutally murdered by a few courses. As a humanities student, am i allowed to fail any courses? If not, how will I be able to make up for it? Will i go on academic probation? Sorry, I'm bombarding this post with questions. Stress is catching up, so is my lazy ass -_-'

Technically, you can fail pretty much any course. However, it may impact you later.

If your average for the term is less than a 3.0 you will be put on academic probation. If you get the same average or lower next semester you will get kicked out of Mac.

In second term (sometime in the latter half) you will be asked to pick a program for second year. If your marks are quite poor, and the program only accepts a certain number of people it is possible you may not get in. You may be able to mirror the program and re-apply after year II, but you still may not get in.

So technically, I just have to do better in the second semester?
Or will I be kicked out if my overall average from both terms are less than 3.0?

If you fail Humanities I'm going to have to personally come over there and slap you. Harsh, but true. Let that be your motivation not to fail. :p

If you're having difficulties because you're procrastinating it may be best to speak to one of the academic specialists from CSD (but they work in the Commons building). They helped me with time management and the sorts. Also, exams haven't started yet so... get studying =)

Kidding, but the reason I'm almost failing a class, is because I can't satisfy the TA's "ideal" essay, I lost marks for accidentally placing a page number on the title page >_>

haha that sucks. I lost marks for lab performance for first chem lab because i asked the TA where the stapler was O.o

I could be wrong on this, someone please correct me if I am..

You need to get a certain amount of credits for certain programs. If you fail one of your classes this term, I'm pretty sure you will need to pick up another class in another term, any other year of university (unless it was a class vital to the program you want; then you'll need to take it next term).

I'm pretty sure it will cost you ABOUT $500 and you'll have 6 courses for that term instead of 5.

It's tricky.

To be a full time student you need to be taking at least 21 units. You don't need all 30 units to progress to into a Level II program (I didn't), but it may restrict you from certain programs.

There isn't anywhere I've found so far that explains it.

According to the Humanities booklet I got in the summer, it says the minimum would be any Level 1 program, which must include at least six units of Level 1 history courses.

I'm taking 3 history courses (that would be 9 credits), and if I fail one (let's hope not), that would still be 6. So technically, I'm fine with advancing to the 2nd year? ><

You generally do need 30 units to progress into Level II Honours...which is especially relevant for science students...a lot of our courses require Honours registration in order to take them.

I don't know how to explain it properly. I'll explain it in my case:

I'm in Honours Pol Sci. It states that I need to have a certain amount of courses. It just so works out that I need so many electives each year. In second year, I took an awful Geo course and I dropped it at the VERY last minute (so I didn't get any money back. You need to drop it on the Wednesday or earlier to get all money back, the Thursday to get 90% back, and if you drop it on the Friday of the last drop date, you get no money back).

If I went into third year and took everything as normal, without taking an extra class, I would have been short one class (or 3 units) when I graduated. So at the beginning of this year, I picked up an extra course - so I had 6 courses this term and it added about $500 to my tuition.

I assume it's the same if you fail a course. It'll show up as a fail on your record, but it'll say you didn't earn any credits (or units) for it.


I don't know if it's the same for all programs though. I would suggest going to an academic advisor. Make an appointment. It's super quick and they are SO much help.

What does 'Honours' mean? You have to be a full time all 4 years?

Yeah I'm full time for 4 years. Through Honours, I can do a masters or a PhD, things like that.

I hate crappy/******* TAs like that; my chem lab TA was awful . I'm pretty sure she procrastinated reading those lab manuals just as much as I did...
