Hispanic 1Z06
I took this year long class with Dr. Minelli in 08-09.
The class is split into two terms but only one mark is assigned at the end of the year and the second term is weighted 5% more than the first.
An additional section was being taught at the same time by Dr. Velasquez and has received rave reviews.
I really enjoyed intro to Spanish. The textbook was helpful but confusing at times as Dr. Minelli often taught differently than the text. It is CRUCIAL to teach yourself the lesson BEFORE you go to class as Dr. Minelli focuses more on aural development than grammatical constructions.
Please note that intensive means intensive. From learning Hello on the first day to knowing several tenses and endless lists of vocab by the end (The text is 15 chapters long).
A weekly tutorial is also required, where your weekly homework (cuaderno) is checked and you spend time learning the culture of hispanic nations.
Breakdown:
3 Compositions and 3 Dictations - 15% (3% each, lowest mark dropped)
3 Quizzes - 15% (5% each)
Midterm - 20%
Attendance in lecture - 10%
Tutorial - 10%
Exam - 30%
(Entire process is repeated second term)
Definitely take if you are interested in the language but only take if you have the time to devote to learning it properly. Space is limited
