This course is taught by Dr. Madsen. She only teaches this one course at McMaster and she works at St. Joseph’s Healthcare full time. Overall I thought she was a great prof and I really liked her lecturing style. She’s passionate about her field, makes jokes in class, pokes fun at herself and sometimes relates the material to her own life. The only thing I didn’t really like was that she doesn’t use Avenue, but instead sends PowerPoint slides, scanned readings (she doesn’t use a textbook for the course), etc. to everyone’s email.
I liked the course material in general, though some parts can be a bit boring she does a good job of keeping things interesting. Its main focus is the psychological changes and experiences of the older adult. Dr. Madsen makes everything pretty straightforward and generally tells you what to focus on and expect for the midterm and exam. She was fairly laidback with the paper for the course and didn’t require the writing to be super formal.
The mark breakdown is 30% Midterm with multiple choice, short answer, and short essay questions, 30% Research & Reflection Paper, 40% Final with the same format as the midterm.
Overall I really enjoyed the course and I’m glad I got to take it as it seems to fill up pretty fast.
