If my final mark is...
So Based on the marks posted on avenue (our final exam was posted). My grade ended up being 84.38%... Is that a 10 or an 11.
a 10 is 80-84
11 is 85-89

Technically, thats a 10
but if the prof is kind enough.. he/she would be able to push it to an 11.
Email the prof and see what he/she can do for you =)

I just talked to my prof about a similar problem today. Usually when the exam marks are posted, they have already submitted the overall grades to the registrar. Unless there's a really big error, they don't really want to do all the paper work to explain to the dean about the 0.5 point difference. It's not like I earned that point myself anyways, so it's reasonable that they don't bump it.

depends on the prof. Some profs make it a 85 if you get a 84.5 or above.

Yeah, depends on the prof. Some will round, others couldn't care less.

McMaster's stance is that the marks are truncated - 84.9 is a 10, not an 11.
However, some professors will bump you.
But the thing to note is that it is defaulted at 10, and professors have to actually change your mark - 84.5 is not "automatically" an 85, but they might decide "okay I'll give anyone whose final mark is an 84.5 an 11" - but it's not automatically done.

They do that, I've been like a half % from the next grade and e-mailed the prof about it and got bumped up. One prof gave me 2 marks on the last lab to bring me over to the next grade. |

If you look at McMaster's grade system, an 80 to 84% is a 10, and 85 to 89% is an 11. That one percent, from 84.01 to 84.99%, is up to the professor's decision on how they want to handle it. There was a case where my average was an 89.35% and was bumped down to an 11 and there was another time where my average was an 84.05% and was bumped up to an 11. I would email the professor and ask them how they handle these cases.

Okay, guys, they've posted the marks for LAST TERM'S Chem alongside this term's because they want to calculate the Most Improved or somesuch. And I've found that I made a 79.13% on the course. Should I just leave it as the 9 I got (since it is, after all, soooo last term), or should I perhaps query after a maybe-chance-at-a-10?
