Indigenous Studies 3G03
This is a topic course into the arts. This year, the topic was Drama.
I really liked this course because it was a drama class, NOT a lecture. Definitely not an academic course but very practical – something you don’t really see in university but is nonetheless, a very valuable experience.
Once we got rolling, we would spend a lot of time doing warm ups such as mental/physical/vocal exercises. The major assignment for the class over the semester was to tell a story with a song, given a theme. Each class, one or two people would tell their story and then retell it with sound and movement. Then, the entire class would retell the story with sound and movement as an ensemble piece.
I think everyone loved this class and enjoyed playing drama games and telling our stories. Another good thing about this class was that no previous experience was required but everyone was equally successful throughout the term. The instructor was amazing and we were all very supportive of each other. The final exam was an open studio performance which was basically a piece that had all our stories interwoven together.
We also went to Toronto to see a contemporary native play which also very fun.
I don't have a mark breakdown on me, but basically, it was attendance, participation, readings and a final performance exam (which was basically an open studio).
The only improvement I can suggest is that this class should have been either more frequent (it was a once a week night class) or it should extend into term 2
