Iron Rings
How do you like McMaster iron rings? Is it me, or they have too much chrome on them?
Normally iron rings are not plated, they remind us of hard metal surfaces that are rough as life itself, but ours are so shiny they look like plastic novelty rings.
What do you guys think?

I saw a TA with it last year (he probably had it for a few years already), it seemed pretty dull, not all that shiny. I don't know what this years looks like.

It looks like this:
It has so much chrome, it looks plastic. The fact that it lacks any engravings showing its number, material and master also doesn't help.

no, it looked nothing like that, except for maybe the pattern on the outer surface (hard to tell from the sheen). It looked similar to this(except the pattern on the outer surface) (random picture from internet)

Wonder how I can reach Camp #13 to tell them this design sucks.
But you know, make the message subtle...

I actually expected nothing less than Day 1 criticism of the new iron ring.
Reply to this thread in a few years when the ring is worn in; or go and lose it, and buy a used one from the Alumni office. Those ones are literally rounded off at the edges.
But criticizing your new iron ring for being too new is not actually a legitimate thing to do...

I'm not criticizing it for being new. I criticizing the new design, which is chrome plated. Chrome is not going to disappear in 5 years, it's gonna remain there, plus it might get scratched, which will be very visible. It does not happen to the old design, which is the reason why it was used for all those years (not to mention the whole symbolic idea of it).

A relative of mine graduated from Mac in the 1980's, and he lost his ring a long time ago. He ordered another one three years ago, and told me his new ring started off looking brand new and shiny like the one that I got this year, but it dulled after just a couple years and doesn't look new anymore.

Because they are made out of stainless steel and not iron
Also they are all like that. I only know off UFT, that gives students the option of iron or stainless steel.
But it will dull out overtime with scratches and such.
