LABOUR STUDIES 1A03 elective course?
I changed my RELIG ST 1E03 to LABR ST 1A03. I haven't heard much about these two courses. I just need to know if it's a wise choice to take LABR ST 1A03. I am a nursing student and I do have heavy courses. I wanted to take ANTHRO 1A03 but it's full. I'm hoping LABR ST 1A03 is an easy course. Does anyone have any idea about this course ? I am also thinking of taking a minor in SOCIOLOGY so I'm taking the SOCIO 1A06 . So is it a good idea to take Labour Studies ?

My question's kinda messed up. Sorry. XD But thanks so much in advance

so you're taking LABR ST 1A03 ? I read in other threads that this course is pretty easy but I'm not really sure that's why I'm thinking it through. Plus I'm taking it in the EVENING because i need a 2nd term elective. I was also thinking of taking PEACE ST but i can't due to schedule conflicts. so yeah, my only choice is Labour studies which sounds boring but maybe easy.

btw, thanks for the reply.

well I didnt do much research on electives..considerin g i only have 2....well one elective since economics is part of the engineering and management

+ i rather take a course where i obtain some general knowledge..rather music where we memorize the history of old white men's music and never talk about it after that..so i didnt look at difficulty..not to mention, as an engineer student, we barely have any good electives..so i took it

this prolly didnt answer your question but its my two canadian cents

LOL. no no. You actually gave me a good point. thanks for that. it's also hard for me to take a good elective coz my required courses conflict with everything else. it's pretty annoying. But you have a good point on the "general knowledge" vs. "short term infos". thanks a lot.

I hope this helps

Course Description
Working-class people make up the majority of society. Yet, their voices often go unheard and
their contributions undervalued. This course will look at some of the struggles of the most
marginalized and ‘invisible’ workers, including migrant farm labourers, domestic servants,
garment workers and ‘sweat shop’ workers – in Canada and around the world.
Theoretical orientation of the course
The first section of the course is centered around theoretical considerations of social class and a
class analyses of work, wealth, power, and inequality. We will examine the concept of class as
being rooted in relations of power, control, conflict and ownership as opposed to the more
conventional views of class as lifestyle and income levels.
Workers voices and campaigns
Contextualised within a class-based theory of racism, gender and labour, the second section of
the course looks at struggles to improve the plight of some of the most oppressed workers abroad
and at home. With the rise of ‘globalization’, many of the world’s biggest and most well known
corporations have downsized their domestic workforce, and transferred production to so-called
‘3rd world’ countries, where profits are high, wages low, benefits non-existent, and work
conditions abysmal.
Many leave behind their families and come to Canada and the US seeking dignity and respect for
their work, but instead, often find only ‘hard times’ in the fields and factories of the ‘North’.
Resistance and Change
The final section concerns movements for social change, outlining the principles of the union
movement, and briefly introducing the main political expressions of the organized workers
movement in the 20th century: social democracy/reformism, anarchism, and socialism. We will
also consider the struggles, and gains, made against gender and racial inequity, as well as the
continued persistence of these in the workplace and broader society.

I took labour studies 1A03 during the spring term and I found it pretty easy. We had to write one article review and one essay. The midterm was short answer and based off of the assigned readings and notes. For the final we had two essay questions, one of which we were told about prior to and we were allowed to use notes and the courseware. If you keep up with your readings then you shouldn't find it difficult

I've taken both 1C03 and 1A03 and I found both really interesting and pretty easy.

Labour Studies 1C03 is focused on more current issues in work and theories about work. You talk about deskilling, the effect of technology on work, Marxist theories, etc.

Labour Studies 1A03 is focused on the history of the Canadian labour movement (as you could probably guess lol) so you'll learn about Canadian labour from the 1880's to the present. The course is mostly focused on the struggle for unions to get recognized, major strikes, and the economy and work throughout the 20th century.

The labour movement is a really important part of Canadian history so I feel like these classes will give you a background on the events that have really shaped Canada. Stuff like public health care and public education, as well as the employment standards we enjoy today are all things that exist in because of the labour movement.

Both classes are entirely essay based but the expectations are clear and as long as you go to class and do the readings, you can't do poorly.
