Linguist 2L03/Anthro 2L03

The beginning of this course is mostly a review of the phonetics unit of Linguist 1A03. The course covers IPA transcription and all sounds in the phonetic alphabet. Then, the course moves on to discuss how speech sounds can be represented waveforms and spectrographs. There is some math and physics involved towards the end of the course.

I had Dr. Yoon for this course. The textbook he chose is very helpful. At times it can be very technical but it complements the course well. The weekly assignments are usually questions taken from the textbook. Dr. Yoon used these questions as fill in the blanks on the midterm. The assignments help to keep you on top of the coursework, and they're pretty easy.

Dr. Yoon is a very fair and helpful professor. This was his first year teaching so he is not very experienced. His accent is difficult to understand at times but he is always happy to help you out during his office hours. He follows the textbook very closely and sometimes posts lecture outlines that are really helpful.

I really loved this class! :] Basically, if you did well in 1A03 you're good to go for the first half of the term, and if you keep that momentum going, the second half of the term (which deals with acoustics and analysis of speech sounds) is not difficult. It involves more mathematical equations, lots of calculus sprinkled in there. Even if you don't have a math background, Dr. Yoon makes it easier to understand. Dr. Yoon is always willing to help you and always cracks a joke here and there which makes the 50 minutes pass by quickly. The assignments are very straightforward and easy, and help you to understand the material.

The midterm consisted of fill in the blanks, some transcription, and identification of sounds (phonemes and their various characteristics). You had to know the concepts well to do well on fill in the blank.

We haven't had the final yet, but as far as we know, the final will consist of multiple choice, true and false, and fill in the blank questions. It will focus mainly on the latter half of the term, and we'll have to know many formulas and come up with answers.

The mark breakdown is this:
Assignments 6 x 5% = 30%
Midterm = 30%
Final = 40%
Extra-Credit Assignment = 5%

9/10

Just to update, we had the final for this class a couple days ago and it's difficulty level was definitely higher than that of the midterm. It was mostly multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false and we had to do a lot of equations and problem solving. It's still a pretty easy exam if you know your stuff though. :]

did you find that he used a lot of questions derived from the textbook questions for the midterm?
thanks!

Last year in the course, Dr. Yoon composed the midterm from questions in the textbook. He used the same sentences and made fill-in-the-blank questions out of them.

luv.ng.u says thanks to pmax for this post.

There were absolutely no mathematical equations and/or calculus questions on the midterm nor the final. Did the course change a lot or something for this year? It's still Yoon teaching it.

I'm wondering what the take-home midterm's about, and how it works.
Is it mainly transcription/Praat?
