McMaster Friends of MSF Displacement Camp

DO YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO BE DISPLACED BY CONFLICT AND PERSECUTION?

40 MILLION PEOPLE DO.

Every day 42 million people exist in one of the world's refugee camps.

This outdoor exhibit gives a brief view of what a refugee camp would be like to those likely never to go through one personally. MAC Friends of MSF team will lead you through the camp explaining what goes on every day. From crossing the border where the guard is likely not to decline a bribe to the cholera station, visitors learn the shocking realities that go on for a population larger than the population of Canada.

Can you image an arm that's as round as an adult thumb?

Children under the age of five who suffer from malnutrition have microscopic limbs. The size of their belly can be deceiving, worms bloats but arms don't lie.

How much water do you use a day?

For a refugee in an established camp the answer is 20 litres. That's a heavy container, one that often must be carried miles back to a ragged tent.

If you run out of toilet paper you run to the store. In a camp the toilet doesn't come with paper, it comes with stink and flies. It also can be a mile away and serving 50 other people.

Food is scarce and there is no variety. Beans, high energy biscuits and rice may be the only food on hand.

Health care is free of charge but going to the doctor's 'office' takes time. Lines can be hundreds of people long at the medical tents.

Those that live in these conditions often have to flee their homes with only the clothes on their back. Children are often alone. People die on the journey to a safe place to rest their heads. They walk through mine fields, national borders, disease and gun men in order to survive.
Doctors Without Borders work within these encampments and in villages providing hope to the hopeless.

What are you waiting for?
