I am fully aware that there is a thread open for your favourite profs, but this isn't asking the same question. My favourite professors are not the sharpest professors I've come across. We are all surrounded by incredibly knowledgeable and intelligent academics here at McMaster, but unfortunately, due to most of our narrow paths towards careers, we will never witness so many amazing minds right around the corner from us. So please, share with us, the minds who you've found to be extraordinarily transcendent of just regular intelligence, but are lurking into the waters of out-of-this-worldly intelligence.

Personally for me, Brian Garrett seems to be that guy. He is probably the quickest and sharpest philosophy professor in the department.

I know there was a chem eng prof who was part of the VESPR theory.

Kevin Dunn hands down (not a prof but a contracted in teacher) who does a lot with the Chem Eng faculty.

..... but no seriously i dont think i've actually had an "intelligent" professor. they all are good at what they do and what they teach (sometimes). But they all have their quirks so i cant say that one is more intelligent than the other.

Professor Dumont, first year chemistry.

He wasn't exactly SHARP. But that guy knew so much on almost everything. He would read all the time about virtually anything of any genre. Deserves some credit.

but I think it is relative considering there's different levels of "intelligence", I mean since there's so many different programs and areas of specialization. Eg a prof in multimedia would be much different (intellectually) compared to biology, or a anthropology professor compared to an engineering prof. Different levels of thought in history and bio or chem or physics or anthro or socio or math/calc

Dr Dan Goldreich for sure! I was in his Neuroscience class.

EDIT: My judgement is not based on how many papers they've published or how many degrees they've done. Intelligence is relative.

i cannot say who is the most intelligent professor in the Linguistics Department and the School of Geography and Earth Sciences (since that is my major and minor), they are all the same to me...

Dr. Ouellette is the most intelligent one I've come across thus far, but very close behind are Horn and Brophy.

Not many people have met and/or have had the opportunity to have a class with Dr. Kahl. He's a professor in the CAS department of the faculty of Engineering. He's been the most intelligent professor I've met thus far, and I have a feeling he'll be of the most intelligent ones if not the most.

I think the place to start is to see how many papers they've published.

just cause someone sounds smart doesn't mean anything, they could have a little con artist in them....
