I remember in first year I bought a notebook for every class.. like I did in highschool usually. But in most classes you just print out your notes the day before and take extra notes on the slides so you don't usually need paper or notepads.

That's not true for all faculties though. In a lot of the Soc Sci and Humanities classes you don't get lecture notes posted, either before or after lectures.

When I visited Mac last year, I noticed a lot of ppl have whiteboards on their door in res. Should I buy a whiteboard to put on my wall or are they given to us too?

There are whiteboards on every door in residence. Personally, I also have a whiteboard in my room on the wall but that's because I learn best but writing on whiteboards and I use it as a study technique.

You can also just tape cellophane to the wall and use that as your white board. Cheaper. ^-^

I was just going to say the same thing.
That is faculty and even sometimes program specific advice, not McMaster wide. It can even be class or Professor specific sometimes.
Notebooks or a laptop are definitely necessary to take notes in most Humanities courses. Occasionally Professors will post slides but they are more often than not not full notes. Just guidelines for you to fill in during lecture.

Indeed. I think in total I've only had full notes for five classes.
For many humanities classes (and soc sci too), if the prof lectures you're expected to copy out what they say...there usually aren't any visual aids provided for you.

Like in Philosophy, I think I've had like 1 prof who relied heavily on visual aids. Most rarely use it, if at all, even in first year.

Thanks Nicole for the helpful info So from reading all the posts I've got some questions:
Is the calender, lanyard and the almanac only for students who buy their MacPasses? If we don't have a MacPass can we still get them? And when do when do we actually get these things?
The usbs were given out during Welcome Week? Was there a particular day?
And finally, what's a MacMaster card and MSU pack(never really heard of that before unless it's also known as something else?) ?
Thanks in advance!

You can get them even if you don't have a MacPass. It's given by the MSU in the Student Centre.

The MSU pack is a "swag bag" by the McMaster Students Union
