Notetaker
Hey everyone,

Just wondering has anyone ever been a notetaker for a course and if so did you receive anything for it? And what additional benefits do you think it gave you (i.e organizational skills)?

Thanks in advance!

If you do it through McMaster it's a volunteer position: https://maclife.mcmaster.ca/CSD/cw/u...s/default.aspx

I believe they contact the class at the beginning of the term if a class needs a notetaker.

Does anyone know when the courses are listed on the site that they need? Or who we contact if we have any questions with this program?

Do they usually need it for upper year classes as well or since they are smaller, is it less likely?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's still run by the student success centre: http://studentsuccess.mcmast er.ca/
It depends if someone in the class needs note taking and goes to student success to ask for it.

I have done it for about 3-4 courses. You basically organize your notes in a word document format (if you choose the typed up notes option) and email them. At the end you get a certificate acknowledging your service and probably a $25-75 titles gift card (not sure if they still do this, I did it two years ago). Also, if you want the acknowledgement certificate, make sure you let them know by the given deadline or they will not remember. Always get your volunteering certified.

As for additional personal benefits: you're almost bound to go each and every class and are required to make organized notes with proper titles and such - which comes in handy come exam/midterm time. This could positively impact your performance in the course, collectively.

Sometimes the course instructor will request notes from the class if CSD contacts them (if one of the students in the class is blind, visual, or hearing impaired, or any other sort of disability). I did it for 3 courses so far, haven't received anything for it as far as I know..

Just wondering when is this given deadline? I've been on the csd website and cannot find one specified, or is it mentioned in class?
To clarify I signed up at the beginning of term and was recently chosen and although I did not do this for anything (monetary etc.) I would like it certified.
Also do I contact the professor about it or just csd?

Thank you everyone for your assistance It is greatly appreciated.

You would just contact Student Accessibility Services. On the same place where you signed up (the notetaking portal), you should now have the option to log in and upload your notes. My guess is a student likely needs them before exams and is therefore putting a request in now. Upload all the relevant material and then contact the notetaking center at SAS to get information on how to proceed. If you have further questions, just call the office and ask for their contact information. Gmail is presently down for me and I can't retrieve it for you myself

I'd normally get an email from CSD asking to email them back and confirm for the certificate. You should email them or go in person to ask them this. I'm sure they'd be willing to help you out.
