how many first year classes can you take when you are in upper years? is it 5 in total?

You're allowed 48 units, i.e. 18 half-year courses, or 6 three-unit courses after your first year (assuming you took a full course load of 30-units in first year)

Does this apply to engineers as well?

Engineering has fairly specific guidelines on what you have to take, found in the course calendar.

you are allowed to take random classes outside of whats mandatory though? i was going to claim credit in ensemble performance (music 1G03) but then im at 46 credits (37 first year, 6 from bio 1a03 + chem 1aa3) and would then exceed the 48 max when i take a non-technical elective (since playing cello apparently doesnt count to fulfill that requirement)
