Philip Savage is a Communication Studies professor that is very approachable and down to earth with his students. His lectures are very organized, and he loves utilizing Moodle (similar to WebCT but used primarily by the Humanities Faculty) and initializes some good discussion on course material. Having worked for CBC Radio, his love for public broadcasting really shows in his teachings.
Recently a PhD graduate, Dr. Savage is well known for his 'journals' that he requires you to write in most classes. These journals are a weekly summary of what you have learned in the class, and a chance for you to bring up questions and do some research outside of the class, or reflect on the course material. While they can be very tedious at times and something you don't want to fall behind on, come midterm and exam time these journals serve a very important and useful purpose.
One aspect to Philip's classes that makes them unique is he likes to bring in outside people from respected companies in the industry to speak with the class and give a practical outlook on what is going on in the industry
today and how our degree can be of value to those companies as potential employers. Market research is a big part of his courses (in Qualitative and Quantative) and for him to go out of his way and schedule these people to come in is something that deserves appreciation.
A few courses to look out for Dr. Savage include:
- CMST 2A03 (Quantitative Research Methods)
- CMST 2B03 (Qualitative Research Methods)
- CMST 2F03 (Professional Writing)
- CMST 2K03 (Political Economy of Media)
- CMST 3I03 (Communication Policy)
