Phones in Residence.
Hey, I am going into my first year and have a quick question regarding the phones in the residence rooms (I am in Hedden Triple). Can you use the phones to call Toronto, Brampton etc, or is the phone just used to communicate through the university? I want to know because I am considering buying a cell phone, but if the rez phones can call home then it would be a waste of money. Thanks in advance.

I believe its unlimited local calling(Hamilton to Hamilton), but you would get charged for long distance(Hamilton to Toronto).

Incoming calls to res phones from anywhere in the world is free, and so are outbound local calls. You'll need a calling card to make calls outside of Hamilton with the residence phone.

Do you know the rates that McMaster charges for long distance (Hamilton to Toronto)? I would only be using the phones once in a while for calling home whenever I need something.
EDIT: Thanks kenneth526 you asked my question after I posted this.

They don't offer long distance anymore. You'll need a calling card.

So to verify, if my parents call my rez phone and I talk for a couple of mins, I will not be charged. But if I want to call them I have to buy a calling call before hand. Right?

Correct. In fact, you can talk for as long as you want and you won't be charged.

You can call using google voice, free to call to anywhere in Canada and the US. But you should watch out after December 31st. I don't know if they are going to keep calls to Canada free. They did keep it this year (it's currently the 2nd year it's free), so hopefully it stays free.
