Alls I know is that if anyone actually tries to prevent me from getting into a building, prepare to see a girl starting a brawl.

I think this would just scare students more than anything. Do you really need to picket, a week before a potential strike, just to give out information?
That seems so .. for lack of a better word .. stupid.

How is it stupid to try and inform the community about what's going on?

CUPE 3906 held an information picket at the Sterling Entrance this morning from 10am-12:01pm. We were handing out information about the potential for a strike/lockout after Oct 31, 12:01am. Traffic wasn't delayed, we just stood on the corners with signs and flyers and talked to those people who asked questions. Letting as much of the University Community know about the possibility of a strike/lockout is part of our responsibility, as any labour disruption will affect the whole community.
For those interested, the contents of the flyer we handed out are posted on our bargaining blog at:

I think it's stupid because it was done through picketing. It's just going to make students freak out and think there is a strike happening.
There are other ways to inform the community other than doing exactly what you would do if you were on strike, when you're informing people about a strike.
I understand it's probably the most effective way to go about the situation, since people are concerned about a strike so if they think there is a strike happening, they will pay attention. But I think it would cause more confusion and havok than anything else.

It's a disgusting scare tactic. That's why it's stupid. There's other ways and means of doing what they want to do.

A lot of people, especially community members and parents were quite appreciative that we were letting them know in advance of any potential labour disruption. People appreciate being given a heads up so they know what to expect. Our intention certainly isn't to scare people, but we certainly feel we have a responsibility to do something to get the community to notice.
