Reading assignments:
  • Momen Introduction to Shi’i Islam
  • Takim L. The Heirs of the Prophet (Reserve)
  • Ayoub: Islam
  • Rahman, Major Themes of the Qur’an
  • Watt, M., The Formative Period of Islamic Thought, (reserve)
  • Schimmel, Mystical Dimension of Islam (reserve)

Composition of Final Grades
  • Midterm - 20%
  • 2 Quizzes - 15% each (total 30%)
  • Islamic Mosque Site Visit Paper - 10%
  • Final Exam Take Home Essay - 30%
  • Tutorial Attendance/Participation - 10%

Professor Takim is knowledgeable and he teaches with a sense of humor. The course was dry at times.

Quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class or you get detailed notes from someone.

Site Visit was simple and very easy.

Depending on your TA and how particular they are, your midterm marks can vary. Didn't do so well on the midterm. 5 Definitions and the significances then 1/3 essay questions.
