Theatre & Film 1b03
Hey,
I'm taking Theatre and FIlm 1B03 with S.Joseph. I'm really sick therfore I have to deffer this exam. I tend to do bad on the deffered exams. I was just wondering wat his final exams are based on. Is it more from the textbook or the screenings..Please let me know..Thankyou
Sincerly,
Roshanth

If you attended class and watched all the movies you should have nothing to worry about. The only tricky parts are differentiating all those types of lenses, editing techniques and camera/lighting effects. But the exam will be focusing on material after the mid-term, e.g.: Classical vs. Art Cinema, Experimental Films, Docs, etc. Easy stuff.

I tells ya, this had to be the class that disappointed me the most this year. I realize he was trying to expose us to standard techniques in classic cinema but he'd have made such a deeper impression had he used familiar examples and made the class enjoyable. Most of his students likely havn't seen the classics of the modern era...why throw them back to the stone age?
Give them 'the Godfather' before 'Meet Me in St. Louis," in otherwords. Show them the examples you want in movies they may already have seen.
Exam was easy enough, though. Took me about 45 minutes.

More of critical analysis of the films, their themes and social impact, actually. I found it to be a drawn out elaboration of my video editing and documentary production classes in college, as in geared towards the technical. I think it would be more useful were his students setting out to make a film, and far harder to grasp if you don't have a camera in your hands and film experience under your belt, at least in my opinion.

I thought his goals were pretty clear. "Formal Analysis". As in studying the form of film which I think he did pretty effectively.
I liked how he picked films I had never heard of. I would've been annoyed if he put the Godfather on the course. Not everyone thinks the movies on IMDB's top 250 are the best movies ever made. There's a reason Star Wars and Lord of the Rings weren't on the course.
I didn't like half the stuff he made us watch, but the point of the course was to distance yourself from simply "liking" or "not liking" films. I respect that he didn't just pick his 10 favourite movies.
