Tuition Tax
http://www.pittsburghlive.co m/x/pi.../s_652422.html
What does everyone think of the idea?
I realize this might turn out a bit one sided seeing as we are all university students, but it would be cool to hear other sides as well. Especially since I've heard a lot of people use Pittsburgh as the direction Hamilton is/should be heading, both being former industrial towns that are trying to move toward a more education based industry,
I'm pretty sure most people who've read a few of my posts on similar topics could guess my opinions about this ( ), I tend to get wary whenever people start talking about "making them pay their fair share".
But yeah, thoughts?

Oh, I should have been more clear. This IS NOT for Hamilton, this is being implemented in Pittsburgh. I just wanted to see what people here thought about it.

WHAT THE ****?
Regardless of where its being implemented charging a tax on tuition.
Way to encourage bright futures, make education more and more expensive and tax tuition.
*thumbs up*
Honestly, I really don't think as you said you're going to get an alternative perspective here.

If the government doesn't tax tuition then they'll just tax something equally ridiculous, like oxygen.
Just be thankful that you only have to pay this tax for 4 years. Oxygen on the other hand, you use for decades.

"Not paying their fair share?"
You've got to be ****ing kidding me.
MAKES ME RAGE.
If it was implemented in Hamilton/Mac, I would seriously transfer.

"He said his administration targeted students because the city provides services to them, but they don't pay their fair share to the city."
Then why not tax high school students? And elementary students? And infants?

I think it has to do with the fact that the city provides services to the University population but they pay next to no taxes (ie. University pays a pittance in the form of a Payment in Lieu of taxes, and students pay little property tax to the city , or none at all if they live in another city).

That is a ridiculous idea. But here is something crappier, 32% tuition increases at California State Schools because the California Government is pretty much bankrupt and cut funding to universities.

WOW, that is a huge effing increase.
Could you imagine us having to pay 32% more?
I wouldn't even be able to afford food anymore. ._.

That really blows. University of California includes Berkeley and UCLA, which already aren't cheap. Cal State I can understand a hike, but their tuition is significantly less.
On the other hand, I'm sure Berkeley students will welcome the chance to protest something else

California is a basket case and a half =/
It really sucks for those kids, but I think the funniest thing is that they are protesting with the University workers who are protesting job cuts that were made because of the same budget problems. (source: http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/11/20/cal...sts/index.html)
