I tried that out but before I could reach a long enough duration to "reset" my sleep pattern, I always end up taking a accidental nap.

Extremely hot showers make me sleepy. Then again, I don't really have a "can't go to sleep" problem. I choose to pointlessly stay up.

900th post to sleeping pills. Huzzah.

When I am having trouble falling asleep i take 2 nytol gel caps and bite them open before swallowing.
If I am having trouble staying asleep i just swallow two normally.
If I want both I'll bite into one, swallow one and throw in a robaxacet.
Over the counter sleeping pills are trial and error for the most part. Some help you sleep but make you feel like death in the morning.
I also suggest ear plugs. If the problem is psychological no pills will help. I can chase 3 pills with vodka and still lay awake all night if I can't shut my mind off.
For example, I woke up at 10am tuesday and studied all afternoon until my night class, came home and studied all night for a test wednesday morning, did the test at 11 30, worked an 8 hour shift from 2:30-10:30pm, got home at 11 30 where I took 2 sleeping pills. It is now 3am thursday morning and I am still awake cause my mind will not shut off after having laid in bed for more than two hours.

Read a chemistry/biology/physics text book in bed. Guaranteed to put you to sleep.

i usde to fall asleep at 5am, and couldnt stop doing that. Easy solution would be to just stay up for like 30 hours and then sleep the next night at around midnight and get up at 8 or 9
should get you back on track.

I've heard that artificial light (ie desk lamp and laptop screens) confuse your circadian clock about what time of day it is. Its been suggested to turn off your laptop and/or wear sunglasses an hour before you decide to go to bed.
I really don't know if popping random pills is the solution, it would be a problem if you became dependent on them. But then again, I've never been in such a situation.

Acknowledging how hard it is to exercise when you're feeling completely drained, the quickest way I've found to get my sleep cycle back is to take a faster paced 30 minute walk after dinner, then hot shower, drink some cold water and then hit the mattress. When the cycle's gone on too long, I have in the past gotten a scrip which I think I used for less than a week because it worked quickly to get me to sleep again.
Good luck!
