Skyrim is a lie. Theres nothing special. Don't waste your time.
Most people feel like they enjoy it because of all the hype, and how neat the previous games were.. the expectation that its good fixates you into beliving it. Very unsatisfying game.

You're right, but that doesn't make it any less fun. It's just okay. There's nothing mind-blowing about it. Hence, I said, "It's just your standard RPG, imo..." in my last post.

Oh, and the "arrow to the knee," or "FUS DO RAH" jokes make it much more gruelling, but the premise of them being inside jokes perpetuates the media hype.

EDIT: Also, in a time when many people are obsessed with graphics, it doesn't hurt the game to have beautiful HD scenery that will only be enhanced with mods on PC.

EDIT2: @Rukia: It's different than God of War, which is kind of a linear hack-n-slash. Skyrim's more of a quest-based hack-n-slash with a lot of hiking and dungeon crawling.

It's Todd Howard; he's the royal king of overpromising and not delivering. Yet still Bethesda wins "Developer of the Year" at the Video Game Awards (which, I realize, are a total laughingstock) over Valve, the biggest bros in the industry this year.

It's a sad day for the medium when you recognize that it has become universally acceptable to praise and award a buggy, unpatched game (which is still riddled with problems on PS3) with shallow combat mechanics and promises of downloadable content even before its release, just to milk your wallet a little bit drier.

So glad I opted to play Dark Souls first. Now there's a game with great mechanics (it's console melee combat done right), a fixed difficulty level that doesn't insult the player's intelligence, a dark, twisted world more impressive than Skyrim's (completely seamless with no loading screens), and no downloadable content. You get the whole experience right out of the box. Easily the most satisfying game I've played all year.

I think you are talking about Skyward Sword? And I think I know the segment you are talking about, but it isn't really frustrating. The reason they make you do it is stupid as hell, but the actually level is fine. Anyone who dropped the game entirely because of anything that happens in the last few hours is pretty fickle.

As for the art style, they keep changing for a few reasons. First, it helps keep the series fresh. Second, people keep complaining. WW had a cartoony look (Which was awesome), but people complained. So they went to a more realistic look. People complained, because at that point, HD consoles were out and the game looked dated. So they tried doing something in between, which I'm glad they did. Makes the word more whimsical.

EDIT: Haven't played Skyrim, so I can't comment too much on it. But the fact that it is winning so many awards when the PS3 version is supposedly completely broken is a little disturbing.

Skyward Sword is starting to get really good. It started slow (or maybe that's because I got minimal time in with exams) but I'm on the 3rd temple and it's pretty sweet.

Just bought BF3. Excited to try it out

Agreed with Circa, Skyward Sword is amazing. I have nearly beaten the game thanks to the break and it is an awesome game.

Unfortunately, I didn't get in all the video game playing i wanted to, but then again, Christmas/holidays are meant for family time so I don't feel so bad.
