Yes, you read that right. And no, this isn't one of those threads with a deceptive title to get you to click it. You literally have the chance to get a free room for next year!

SOCS and MacStudentRentals understand how expensive school can be, and want to take some of that load off. So they're offering a free room for a year to a SOCS member who is in financial need!

The room is located at 70 Sanders boulevard and it will be furnished with a bed and desk. Also, all utilities as well as cable TV, hi-speed internet and phone will be provided free of charge! (this would normally cost over $400 per month to rent, all included)

To apply, send a 500 word essay to Sam Li at [email protected] on why you should be considered based on financial need. You don't need to be on OSAP (the many threads on here have shown that it isn't the best indicator :p), just explain your situation.

The deadline is Friday April 9th, 2010. If you aren't currently a SOCS member but want to apply, second term memberships are only $10 and last until August. And yes, we run events through the summer too! Just drop by MUSC B108 if you want to pick one up.

Is this a basement room? Landlord or company owned house? How can the landlord be contacted (do they own 12+ houses on the same street?). Who will you be living with? Utilities included? Are pets allowed?

I think pictures of the house would be nice as well

Its a company owned house, and I assume that the land lord would give you contact information if you start renting, or are chosen to live there next year. Utilities are included. You'd be living with other students who rent the rooms.

I haven't seen the room myself, but I know another member lives there and said the room was nice. I'll see if I can get him to come post about the pets policy, whether its a basement room, and maybe even take some pictures

Hey, I'm the member that lives in the house.

They have business cards with contact information, and there's actually a couple people who would qualify as landlords. I'm fairly certain there's no pets allowed, but I don't think they'd care about like a small fish tank or something like that (again, you'd have to talk to them though).

I'm fairly certain the room being given away is an upstairs room. The way it works is like this: there are 5 guys living upstairs, and 4 girls living downstairs. Both parts of the house have their own kitchen/fridge etc, and there's plenty of cupboard space and all that.

I can post pictures of like the kitchen area of the upstairs part of the house, and maybe like pictures of the upstairs floor and bathrooms too (there's 2 bathrooms upstairs, not sure about downstairs). Pictures should be up within the next day or so.

I'll also take a look at my lease agreement, see if there's anything about pets in it. Oh and also I'm 99% certain the house is non-smoking.

For anyone interested, the deadline is this Friday.
