That's decent for 1st year soc sci. A averages are fairly rare in soc sci. I highly doubt anyone in your program, now or ever, has done something like 12, 12, 12, 12, 11 and certainly not in 1st year.

I feel like a royal failure.
First year grades were all A's, except for 2 A+ and 2 A-.
Thought that was the end of the world...now I went and got myself a B+ this semester...
WHY???????

Well, if you want to remember, you can always go to your Grade Report and check there like I did myself and perhaps others as well.

High averages in soc sci (and humanities) are pretty unusual... Especially in first year where the TAs snipe you like no tomorrow. It's all subjective... Easier to pass, harder to excel. The exception to this would be economics, where it is definitely possible to get all 12s because most of the courses are objective material and/or evaluated in a multiple choice format.
That said, I didn't start pulling good grades until second year (without bothering to look it up, I know my intro econs were both 12s but the rest of my grades were pretty average) when I got comfortable in a program I liked. If you're doing well in soc sci from the get go, you're doing fine.
