Why can't Mac faculty know what they're doing?
ok, need some help.
I need to get a COLLAB course added to my SOLAR registration for winter '11. I didn't add it in the summer because one of my classes was switching from wed to mon mornings, and now the faculty has decided not to change, and to put that monday morning class back to wed mornings. So, I need my elective to go in on monday morning, and the only elective for COLLAB that fits in, is abnormal psych.,
I emailed the prof who said she doesn't mind me being put into the full class on monday mornings, and that i had to contact martha davis, the student advisor for nursing. But martha says that she can't add me into a course in solar, that it's set by the university how many seats are available.
I know for a fact it's possible, because I know people who have been put into full courses before. Does anyone know who do I contact about this? and also, does anyone have an email for the registrars office?

She's the Mac nursing advisor
I know that Martha is our student advisor, and I've contacted her, but she seems to think she doesn't do this, when the prof says she is the one to contact. And I'm sure that the registrar's office will tell me to contact the department head...
Which... should be Martha...
this is ridiculous... -1 point for Mac

Sounds like she's the only one who can actually do something about it. I would keep checking SOLAR and makybe email her back when we get back from the break. After seeing that it's clearly not opening up, she might be more lineant towards getting you a seat in the course.

I'm definately going to keep checking, but since there are not many COLLAB courses, it's usually unlikely that they open up, which sucks, the THursday morning class is open but my stats class is in the exact same time slot so I can't do that one.
I also emailed Mary Guise who is our associate dean, maybe she might know.

Generally for getting in full courses, you contact the department secretary. Is that what Martha does? You can go to her in person and ask again. When she says she can't do it, tell her "I already talked to this prof and she said you can." If she still won't, tell her you need to talk to someone else (preferably above her who has more power)
I know of some profs who ignore emails or tell people "no" for something they actually CAN do. Then when that person talks to them again, they give in. They get asked so much, they only answer people who actually care enough to ask more than once. That might be what's going on here with your advisor.

I suggest nicely emailing her back and just stating that you've talked to the professor who is teaching the course, and that they said that they don't mind you being in it and that she's the person to have put you in the course. Then ask her if she isn't the person to ask to be added into the course, does she have any suggestions as to who you should ask. If she continues to be unhelpful, email the psychology department, tell them the situation, and ask if there's any way that they can add you to the class.

Thanks for the suggestions... I had emailed the prof prior to emailing the student advisor, to confirm that she was ok with me being put into the class. I outlined this to the student advisor in the email I sent her as well.
And it's difficult because it's not the psychology department, its a Mohawk Collab elective, so the psychology department is not involved at all. It's the mohawk nursing faculty that deals with collab apparently, there isn't really a department head for the collab courses.
So I guess right now I'm waiting to hear back from the associate dean, Mary Guise, and see if she can direct me to who I should speak to, But I would bet she'll say Martha Davis, as that's who she directed me to for ths past semester to overload on SOLAR (Which Martha was able to allow me to do)
Oy....

profs
From what I learned as a TA the profs can say it is OK for you to come into a class but they can't logistically make it happen. All they can do is give permission.

Just a point of clarification- if the course is ACTUALLY full, no one can do anything about it and you'll need to wait for a spot to open up.
But just because it shows up as full on SOLAR does not mean it's actually full...go see your faculty advisor who should be able to see if there are hidden seats on holdback.
