Apply to be a Psych 1X03 TA

Applications to be a Psych 1X03 TA are now up! A current TA has this to say about the position: "I am finishing up my second year as an Intropsych TA and I've loved the experience - it's fantastic."

If selected for the position, you will have to take Psych 3TT3 - Applied Educational Psychology next year as well.

A current Psych 1X03 TA will be available on macinsiders to answer any questions you may have.

Apply here:

The requirements for Psych 3TT3 are having an A- in both Psych 1X03/1XX3. Does this mean that if we don't meet this requirement, we shouldn't even bother?

I'd love to be a psych TA but taking a course that could be GPA-killing doesn't seem worth it.

I'm on the fence about it...for later on in my schooling :s
I think it would be a good experience, but I also don't know if I can handle the extra workload if they let me do it... lol... since I'll only be in 2nd yr for 2010... but 3rd yr is apparently the hardest for the Nursing program
hmmm

It is very competitive, I believe last year there were over 200 applications, so it is rare that someone will be hired that doesn't fit the outlined requirements. On that same note, there are exceptions to every rule and so it can't hurt to try. Worse comes to worse, you get some more interview experience.

It's a fantastic experience and worth it. As long as you're willing to put time and effort into the course, it's not GPA-killing.

What kind of GPA do they look for? Because I did well in the Psychs but but overall GPA for first year wasn't that great.

Do you have to be in the psych program to TA?

Or can you apply regardless of your program? Assuming obviously, that you meet the minimum GPA requirement.

There is no specific minimum GPA - the focus is on Psych performance. However, if there are two relatively equal candidates and one has a significantly higher overall GPA, it's likely the one with the higher GPA would be selected.

You can be in any program as long as you've taken the courses. This year we've had people in Psychology, Biology, Health Sciences, the list goes on!

I haven't really taken a lot of psych courses, but I've done really well in the ones I took. Think my chances are slim?

Can anyone who has been, or is, a TA comment on the number of hours per week that they typically work - not paid hours, actual working hours. I've heard a wide range of answers from people.

Thanks

There are some TAs who have only taken the first year psychology courses.

As for actual work hours I can't give you a number - it completely depends on the individual. Some TAs are able to stay within the assigned approximately 60 hours per term. These hours are assigned on the assumption that the TAs remember everything they are supposed to teach well enough to teach it. Some TAs prefer to put in extra time to brush up on the material. Some decide to offer extra office hours. It all depends on you as an individual.
