Campus for Compost

MACgreen's Campus for Compost

MACgreen needs your help! As students of the McMaster community we are all aware of how inadequate our waste services are. In comparison to the Hamilton community located but a street away, our McMaster community is extremely limited in terms of the items that can be properly disposed of. In this day and age, and in a community so large, this is not acceptable.

In response to this, MACgreen wants the students to stand up for sustainability! Thus, we are implementing Campus for Compost—a one week campaign from March 2nd to March 6th 2009. In partnership with the MSU Services, this campaign will aim to raise awareness of our campus waste policies and showcase how MAC can improve. We will be holding an organic waste audit to measure what can be done, have volunteers promote environmental awareness, and most importantly be gathering petition signatures to show student support for changes in waste practices.

This will hands down be one of MACgreen’s largest events to date; thus we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to do help with the following:
  • Be stationed in the MUSC and help pump the cause and get signatures (this also gets you a FREE TSHIRT!)
  • Pass around our petitions amongst your groups or circles to help us gain support, and encourage people to join our facebook group!
  • Find us in the MUSC and sign the petition themselves!
If we all combine our efforts a powerful and influential movement can be made. This is our school, our community, and our future—let’s fight to make it sustainable!

Please contact [email protected] if you can help in any way!

You can also check out this group on facebook.

From Katie Stiel, MacGreen Coorindator: "In addition to the media coverage we are getting for this event, Cable 14 will be at MAC at 1:30pm this monday. So if you're interested, get your hair did, practice your smile, and bring your friends "

How about MacGreen takes some time to welcome Elizabeth May when she comes to Campus and stop ignoring my emails!

...unless of course they are all just too busy for her.

Perhaps they would rather focus on relevant politicians.

Ok so they don't feel like entertaining an environmentalist who is promoting her book on Global warming...

Funny how they are doing a conference with the organization that Elizabeth was a founding member of the day after her visit to mac.

She's a lot more then a politician...indeed, she's hardly a politician.

I really don't care to get into it either, I'm just a bit frustrated by the lack of response.

May's decision to run against Peter Mackay again made her irrelevant. She needs to win a seat in the House of Commons. She couldn't win the seat last election when the environment was the big issue, the Liberals didn't run a candidate in the riding, and her party poured tons of money into trying to win the seat.

With the economy now the issue, the Liberals running a candidate in the riding, and the difficulty her party will face finding credit to fund their next campaign; I do not see how she can win the riding unless Mackay resigns.

I agree with SarahP that Elizabeth May is not a typical politician; she is sincere and honest. (Sometimes too honest for politics)

She wants to represent her home riding, a noble goal. Most party leaders who look at the numbers and run in a safe they are pretty much guaranteed to win.

The Green Party can win in urban BC and potentially in urban Ontario. May should run in B.C., focus her campaign there and win seats.

Once the Green Party has seats in the House of Commons, there will be no stopping them. They will become revelant to the national debate, they will get the media attention they so need, and their policy ideas will become law.

I'm a big fan of any party which is fiscally responsible and socially progressive; hence why the Green Party received my vote a few years ago.

The Party has a great candidate in ADFW; maybe in a few years (after the party has established itself by winning seats in BC), we will see Peter Ormond win this riding.

Further, Ms. May must visit McMaster again. This time, she must visit during the week when students are present on the campus. She is getting great reviews from the campus press when she is engaging with students. (I had to listen as one of my student journalist friends talked my ear off the other day about how great May is)

May did an hour long interview with CFMU over the weekend. It aired Tuesday at noon. I'm supposed to get a copy of it later today and will link to it when I do.

I don't understand this initiative. What is going to happen with the petitions and what is the ultimate goal of MacGreen?

There have been previous attempts at composting on campus but they haven't been successful.

How is this attempt going to be different? I find the fact that MacGreen hasn't contacted Hospitality Services in regards to this initiative especially troubling. They would be the biggest player in this issue.

Is there a concrete plan or proposal?
