Is coop worth it?
Hey guys, just wondering is coop worth it? I'm in a biochem specialization (second year) but I'm really unsure as to whether or not I should do coop. The program seems like a lot more work. If I don't do coop I'll have more electives and room for a minor. So I can't make up my mind. Minor vs. coop. Any help?
Also what are the interviews like? Anyone wanna share their experiences? Sorry my Science 2C00 course is next term so I feel really unprepared lol.

Dude, coop is essentially work placement that the school helps you with (but doesnt promise tho). It is better that you have it now, so are not green when you graduate.
Think about it this way, it won't hurt to have it, plus you get paid.

Doing co-op doesn't take up elective space...and I do know people who did minors in specializations, it's definitely possible, so there's no reason why you couldn't do a minor in co-op.

Coop is arguably better than even getting a minor -- not that taking coop placement disqualifies you from getting the latter. People are graduating in droves with no work experience... this is one of the few advantages its possible to get over your competition.

No, you just get a job for 12-16 months during summer or before your last year, but Im in engineering, maybe it works differently for sciences.

It does work differently for science.
And just because it's difficult that doesn't make it impossible. If you want to get a minor with specialization, you can do it, and people have in the past.

Doesn't matter what program you are in. I put myself in your future employers shoes. Would you chose someone who has no work experience over someone who does have experience. I know with the minor is it more complicated. Have you already started taking courses during the summer and have you looked it in the future (night courses especially)

on a coop now. Learned more in a week here than a single course can teach me in a year. Expectations are much higher at the workplace and you are expected to know far more than they teach you in school. That said they are lenient on coop students.
-learn more
-make money
-have a year reflectively stress free
-use as a testing ground for interests/future career choices
-get you "foot in the door" with a company
-get super valuable job experience
