physics coop
I heard you had to be top 0.1% to get coop in physics where they will send you to CERN and NASA (from the university viewbook) Is this true?

Here you go, I found these websites that talk about physics and coop:

http://physwww.physics.mcmas ter.ca...hphyscoop.html

http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...12/pg1621.html

Feel free to play around with them and find out as much information an you want..

ohh and if you decided to come to mac, try and attend the [email protected] open house, where u can meet up with upper year students and professors (that way you can ask them everything you want about the program, the coop etc..)

I'm not sure if that's something external to other types of coop internships like that, but for CERN you need one of those NSERC (or something close to that, can't remember the exact acronym) federal scholarships that the university gets and it's put towards research at internships. So i dont think it's a matter of the "top 0.01%", more so one or two students can apply and get accepted to doing those internships since the slots are limited.

But hey, take what i say with a grain of salt, my memory is too fuzzy to give you a good answer.

Top 0.1% means absolutely nothing. To get into coop, you go through an interview process where your interview, application AND grades are taken into account. It's definitely not solely based on grades. Once you get into coop, you're not handed a job, you have to apply for the jobs you're interested in, and it's up to the company to decide whether or not to hire you. You can apply wherever you want, in addition to the jobs that the coop office posts.

So no, what you heard is not true.

you don't need to be in the top 0.1% to be accepted in co-op,but there is no way in hell you're working at NASA, even if you are in the top 0.1%........

There have been physics students in co-op working at NASA and CERN as well. I am fairly certain both of those students found those opportunities on their own, rather than through the co-op office. The office posts some pretty great opportunities as well, such as the Canadian Space Agency.

As was already mentioned, getting into the program is based on grades, an application, and an interview. Physics is a fairly small program, and the number of people who choose to do co-op is even smaller. If you are interested and show it by putting effort into your application, you should have no problems getting in
