Be very careful. Downloading copyright content for personal use in canada is NOT illegal. American companies cannot sue you and your ISP cannot cut you off for it. HOWEVER, uploading IS illegal as this is distributing content. Note that default settings for almost all torrenting include uploading and downloading. As such if you are using torrents you are committing a crime and can be fined! As such anything you get from say the piratebay is in most cases illegal. But if you direct download that same content (in canada) you will be fine.

Can you not limit your upload so essentially you aren't uploading at all? Yes, you're still uploading but like on a 2.0 GB file I only uploaded 5 KB or something. I'm not too sure if they'd be pursuing against you for 5 KB haha.

Just use private torrent trackers and you'll be fine. Only nubs use public ones like piratebay.

Well, what internet provider are you with? The selection to choose from in Canada isn't that large, and even the smaller companies like TekSavvy rent their lines from the bigger players.

Off-topic, but investing in a VPN service isn't a terrible idea. $8 a month and I don't have to worry about that potential nasty letter.

Limiting your upload speed can have an adverse effect on your connection.

@chappy she probably did it from a public torrent. Besides there was some post or whatever where it is legal to DL stuff for personal use in Canada you just can't upload infringing material. Technically ISP's cant limit your service because you DL it but then again no1 enforces that law hence everyone is scared of ISP's catching them

Maybe to some people. It doesn't affect my download speeds.

You might not notice it, but it affects you too, yeah.
Peers favour peers that upload to them. If you're uploading something to another peer at a high speed, then typically that peer will respond in kind. Thus, high upload speeds lead to high download speeds. You can't set the upload speed excessively high though, as that's another problem in and of itself.

No, I don't get affected usually. Some torrents just go extremely slow, but that is because of another issue (not as many seeds). I know what package I have with Rogers and what speeds I should be expected and it's at par.

Yes you can. That's what I've been doing for 5 years now. But I do feel like an ass sometimes, I mean there are all those companies being ripped off by pirates, and here I am ripping off the pirates.
